The park supports a diversity of birds, mammals, and amphibians. One of the most conspicuous signs of animal activity in the park is the excavation of dead trees by woodpeckers.
Evidence of large pileated woodpeckers can be seen throughout the park. In their search for insect larvae, they make substantial excavations on snags and logs. In some cases, they take the form of large rectangular holes.
Another animal that leaves telltale signs in the park but is rarely seen, is the mountain beaver. This primitive rodent digs extensive burrows, the openings of which are along many trails.
Look for rabbits, native Douglas squirrels, chipmunks and you might even glimpse a coyote.
Every season is special, from falling leaves to falling snow the Park can put you back in touch with Nature and it is only minutes from downtown Kirkland, Bellevue or Redmond.
Don't miss the trilliums in spring and mushrooms in the Fall. Listen for the low croak of the Ravens that have made their home in the Park or the hooting of an owl.
