Northstar Middle School Field Trip 06-13-14
The school science teacher and six parent chaperones shepherded 45 students from nearby Northstar Middle School to the park via the footbridge over I-405 for a morning field trip. The kids were split into two groups for activities that ran in parallel. After a short break, the kids switched groups. One activity was a nature walk led by former Park Ranger Mary Welborn – now a Foundation Trustee. The students learned about the ecology of the park’s forest, the importance of urban forests to communities, and the importance of volunteers in protecting and maintaining our urban parks. The other activity was a scavenger hunt game, in which the kids matched clues to tagged plants and learned how to identify some of the park’s native plants. Both activities allowed the students to learn about the park get exposed to nature. The science teacher was so pleased with the activities that she asked to make the field trip an annual event.
