SPRING SCHOOL PROGRAMS

A program on June 11th with 20 kids from Northstar Middle School focused on animals and their habitats in the park. The morning program started with examining and holding various specimens of native birds and mammals provided by Interpretive Specialist Alysa Adams and board president Jim Erckmann, with a discussion of adaptions and habitat. This was followed by a nature walk focused on habitats that the animals use in the park, looking for and discussing examples on the trails, such as woodpecker trees.
A program for 50 3rd graders at Ben Franklin Elementary School on June 5th included a nature scavenger hunt and nature walk. Half the kids worked with board president Jim Erckmann in groups to match plants to a list of clues Jim prepared, while the other half took a nature walk with Alysa. Then the groups switched. The nature walks always include a discussion of how important volunteers are in caring for our urban parks.
