Amanita muscaria is one our our loveliest mushrooms, but is poisonous. This is the species shown in some children's tales with the red cap with bits of white on it - often with an elf sitting on it. It is a "mycorrhizal fungus," a symbiotic group that helps plants grow by aiding the roots in taking up nutrients and water. In return, the plant supplies sugar to the fungus for energy. The cap color varies from white to yellow to orange to fire engine red.
